Engineering Options After the 12th Grade

Considering Bachelor of Engineering after your 12th? Shilpa Jachak, an education and career consultant, walks you through the various specializations and career paths in the field of engineering.

You enjoy solving challenging math problems and are aware of your aptitude for science. If you are a naturally curious, analytical, and inquisitive person, engineering may be an excellent fit for you. How can you select the ideal specialization for yourself when there are so many to pick from? More than 35 engineering course options, spanning from mining engineering to aerospace engineering, are available at the IITs alone.

The most popular specializations are computer science and computer engineering since software engineers and those with strong coding skills are in high demand worldwide. Operating systems, Computer Networks, Digital Signal Processing, Database Management Systems, Mobile Computing, Wireless Networks, and Network Security are a few of the subjects you will study under Computer Engineering or Computer Science. An undergraduate degree in computer science is a fantastic place to start for someone who wishes to work in ethical hacking, big data, or artificial intelligence.

Another highly sought-after degree, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, is electrical engineering. Power Systems, Circuit and Field Theory, Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Microprocessors, and Microelectronics are among the topics covered by students majoring in Electrical Engineering. You can become a broadcast engineer or a controls and instrumentation engineer with a degree in electrical engineering.

A fantastic choice for students who wish to work with machinery or even build cars is mechanical engineering. If you select Mechanical Engineering as your option, you will study Thermodynamics, Kinematics, Manufacturing Processes, Power Plant Engineering, Fluid Power Engineering, and Heat and Mass Transfer.

An industrial engineering degree would be ideal if you wanted to open your own factory or manufacturing company. Reliability engineering, manufacturing strategies, quality management, machine tool technology, and industrial laws are some of the topics you will study. Industrial engineers devise strategies to improve the efficiency of production operations.

What makes a bachelor’s or master’s degree in technology different from a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering? Should this matter to you? The sole distinction between the B.Tech/M.Tech and BE/ME programs is the engineering school’s level of accreditation. Both programs have the same value and scope. Therefore, you shouldn’t take this distinction into account while making decisions.

According to recent reports, a number of engineering students are currently having difficulty getting employment. While in college, make sure to network extensively and establish connections with former students of your institution. Completing projects and internships in fields you want to work in after graduation is another effective strategy to eventually get employment. Consider enrolling in online courses from prestigious colleges across the world if you want to stand out from the competition. You will learn from professors from around the world, increase your knowledge base, and these courses can even be listed on your résumé.

Regarding admissions, keep in mind that both your entrance exam JEE, CET results and your grades from your 12th grade are important factors. Because admission to prestigious engineering universities is highly competitive—all engineering colleges are competitive, and some engineering specializations are even more so—you must rank among the top students in your class.

Engineering can be an exciting and interesting subject to study, but it can also be challenging and technically demanding, particularly for those who did not initially want to pursue engineering. Finally, make sure you only select engineering for your undergraduate degree if you truly have a passion for the subject. Assessing your level of interest in this profession can be achieved through aptitude tests and internships.
